Job Purpose

Develop and drive EHS strategy to ensure compliance with legal and other requirements and to meet company EHS objectives in line with groups EHS Policy.

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure compliance to legal and other EHS requirement’s in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya
  • Drive initiatives to achieve EHS objectives as set out on policy deployment
  • Manage the establishment, implementation and maintaining of EHS Management systems such as ISO 45001,ISO9001, ISO 14001 and WCM Methodologies
  • Drive the implementation, monitoring and maintenance of company Safety Standards at the Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Kenya plants as well as the EHS integration of all new acquisitions within the region
  • Monthly reporting of EHS Integration progress for all new acquisitions
  • Ensure, through monitoring and tracking that all business units strive towards the implementation and maintenance of best practice whilst working toward achieving group EHS objectives
  • Interface with Gyproc, Weber and Corporate to ensure alignment with regard to achieving group’s EHS objectives within the region
  • Identify, plan and organise training to ensure awareness and compliance to EHS requirements and where necessary, provide training of employees and contractors
  • Conduct EHS audits to ensure compliance to environmental standards, legal and other requirements
  • ISA / ISA-Mini & Cross audits in other regions (South Africa, Southern and West Africa Hubs)
  • Coordinate incident investigations and process accident reports, investigations and corrective actions and ensure registers and statistics are up to date
  • Carry out periodic surveys e.g noise, dust, heat stress, ergonomics and ensure these are followed through to completion
  • Provide EHS overview and guidance for new acquisitions within the East Africa Region
  • Represent the Company at external events in a professional manner befitting the role
  • Research and provide recommendations in terms of industry best practices and provide support to sites on projects execution
  • Involvement in company corporate social responsibility in respective Division within the East African Hub
  • Involvement in social upliftment programmes in respect to East Africa
  • Adhere to rigorous Corporate Governance in accordance with company Group standard
  • Adhere to risk management protocol in the Business Unit
  • Identify opportunities for growth and innovation with appropriate and manageable risk
  • Define and implement SHEAR strategic objectives to deliver set strategic drivers and vision within the company
  • Lead according to the culture and values of company and in accordance with the Principles and Conduct and Action
  • Set direction and ensure the appropriate resources are allocated
  • Accountability for EHS in all East African Hub plants
  • Support Operations / Plant Managers in Risk management within company East Africa
  • Manage expenses within approved SHEAR budget limits for Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya and all other new acquisitions
  • Interface with business EHS teams in order to align strategic objectives, and implement World Class Methodologies
  • Seek to develop innovative approaches to changing “safety mindset” through involvement of people at all levels
  • Monitor and assist performance of business EHS teams
  • All such duties and/or activities assigned by management/board as and when required

Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Relevant Degree in EHS Management
  • ISO 9001, 14001 & OHSAS 18001 lead auditor
  • Integrated SHEQ auditing certificate
  • Level 3 NEBOSH Certificate in Health and Safety
  • OHSAS 18001 & ISO 14001 Certifications
  • Minimum of 3 years management experience within EHS
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience within the EHS field
  • Must have proven track record in implementing, improving and driving EHS across businesses of similar size and complexity
  • Must have sound knowledge of EHS legislation
  • Able to provide expert advice on general EHS matters and legal provisions
  • Extensive EHS auditing experience
  • Investigate serious injuries on a regional basis
  • Ability to manage stakeholders at a senior level and lead teams without direct management control
